Kitsu was found as a stray and was severely underweight. As she has become more comfortable in her foster home, she has blossomed into a wonderful dog who loves to cuddle but also loves to race across the backyard as fast as her legs will carry her. She is housebroken, semi-crate-trained (see explanation below), and has learned a few basic commands like ‘Sit’ and ‘Down.’ She is a smart girl and seems to be easily trainable, but she’s very suspicious of people’s intentions. She loves to be near people…unless she knows they WANT her to come to them, in which case she tends to play keep away. She will do well in a family that has lots of patience to reassure her that people are good!
Kitsu does well with the two cats and two dogs in her foster home. She is occasionally possessive of her tennis balls, so her adoptive family should be prepared to work with her on avoiding toy aggression if there are other dogs in the house. Kitsu has not exhibited any signs of aggression towards people, although she does occasionally nip at clothes when she’s excited, so she would do best in a home without young children.
Kitsu is a nervous dog when she’s in new situations. When she visited her foster family’s parents for Thanksgiving, she was very reserved for the first ~12 hours, after which point she opened up and shocked the family members by becoming a seemingly different, very affectionate dog overnight! She is not leash trained and is very nervous when out in public, so her adoptive family needs to be prepared to slowly introduce her to new experiences. She does tend to bark at strangers, but will settle within a few minutes. She is hesitant to go into her crate on her own, but if she is gently guided to the entrance she will enter without forcing her. She will occasionally cry for the first 5-10 minutes, but after that she curls up and goes to sleep.
Kitsu has the potential to be a great all-around companion for a family with the patience to comfort and reassure her. She gives lots of kisses and belly crawls over to people for attention. Please contact us today for more information on adding this sweetheart to your family!
